Our story

Trivision was founded in 1986 by a management team focused on developing and introducing innovative technologies for the broadband and telecom industry. Backed by an exceptional engineering team, the company built a reputation for practical, credible product invention — and earned significant industry recognition along the way, most notably for the invention of V-Chip technology.
Between 1993 and 2007, Trivision operated as a Canadian public company under the name Tri-Vision International Ltd. In 2007, Trivision merged its public arm together with the V-Chip technology into WiLAN Inc., a Toronto-listed public company. Trivision itself continued operating as a private company from Markham, Ontario, and remains privately held today.
Over the years, Trivision has partnered with organizations including Ingram (USA), Nichimen (Japan), Sapura (Malaysia), and Telewire (USA), and has designed and shipped more than 200 cable TV related products with sales across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. Today the company focuses on the areas where its engineering strength delivers the most value: component-level repair and refurbishment of broadband and telecom hardware, in-house R&D of monitoring products, and end-to-end network design.

The V-Chip

One of the most impactful pieces of consumer television technology ever developed — invented by Trivision’s engineering team in the 1990s.
Trivision invention · 1990s

The parental-control chip inside every North American television.

V-Chip is age-based and content-based parental control technology for television programs. By reading rating codes embedded in the video signal, V-Chip allows parents to filter what appears on the screen according to their family’s values — 24 hours a day, regardless of who is home. As of federal mandate, every television sold in North America supports V-Chip technology.

V-Chip at the White House

Highlighted in the State of the Union

Trivision’s engineering team designed and developed V-Chip and its associated technology. The technology was subsequently licensed to more than 100 companies — including major television manufacturers such as Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Samsung, Hitachi, and many others in Asia and the United States — and remains a required feature on every television sold in North America.

Recognition: V-Chip technology was formally introduced by Vice President Al Gore at the White House and highlighted by President Clinton during the State of the Union address.

Intellectual property attribution: the V-Chip technology and related patents were transferred to WiLAN Inc. as part of the 2007 corporate transaction. Trivision Broadband and Telecom Inc. presents V-Chip here as historical context — the invention and development work was carried out by our engineering team, and remains part of the culture and standard we bring to current-day product and service work.
